Varun Hiremath’s Green Change Initiative: Empowering Rural Youth for a Sustainable Future

Alibag, Maharashtra – June 5, 2025 | World Environment Day

On the 5th of June, on the occasion of World Environment Day, held at Alibag, Maharashtra, Varun Hiremath, Co-Founder of the Hiremath Family Foundation, came up with an initiative towards environmental change in rural India known as the Green Change. It was taken to take a step towards empowering rural youth and educate the rural children about sustainability and waste management at the village level.

The theme of the initiative stands as "Our Land, Our Future." This imparts knowledge to the children on sustainability so that they can address the issues arising from environmental misuse and how to handle them. Varun Hiremath, with the help of his foundation inculcated future leadership skills in them, directing them to create a cleaner, greener communities .

The participation of the students almost crossed over 150, consisting of students from government schools in the neighbourhood participated with a great amount of enthusiasm. They learnt about various topics like waste segregation, composting, plastic hazards, and waste minimization, how to construct compost pits, draw posters for environmental awareness, plan local clean-up drives, reduce plastic use, and promote reusable materials

“True environmental change starts from the ground — and there's no ground more fertile than young minds,” said Varun Hiremath, Co-Founder of the Hiremath Family Foundation. “With Green Change, we’re not just teaching children how to manage waste — we’re helping them become the leaders of tomorrow’s sustainable world.”

The Three Phases of Green Change

The "Green Change" initiative consisted of three key phases:

  • Eco-Literacy Workshops: Techniques to manage house and school garbage, waste sorting, consumption minimization, and maintaining practices that lead to sustainability were learned.
  • School-Led Action: Practices such as waste audit, bin placement to dispose of waste and clean-up drives were adopted by the students and led by them in their own schools. Additionally, it involved environmental awareness programs such as plays and poster-making competitions.
  • Village Integration: Students worked with the local panchayats and their families and disseminated awareness and presented sustainable solutions to waste management in their villages, respectively.

The first phase took place in three villages at Alibag. Then the program has also been planned to extend to six more villages by December 2025. It has got massive support from local teachers and school authorities, as well as community members. This has also led to the adoption of new practices in various households.

A Symbolic Green March

The children created awareness to the villagers by giving them seed balls that they could plant in local farms or vacant lands to plant greenery. Furthermore, they also held banners reciting, Bhoomi Meri Jimmedari (My Earth, My Responsibility) in the Green March, which was the most critical part of the program.

“Planting saplings is important. But to plant leadership at an early age, that is how the roots will grow, Varun Hiremath added. Green Change is not a campaign but a change in attitude which can make a difference.
